Vassell, Boeheim, Johnson Earn ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State sophomore guard Devin Vassell and Syracuse sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, and Louisville guard David Johnson earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Boeheim led the Orange to a pair of wins last week. He averaged 24.0 points (19-37 FG, 9-20 3FG), 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 37.0 minutes per game. Boeheim had 22 points (9-17 FG, 4-7 3FG) in Syracuse’s 76-50 win over Boston College Wednesday. In a 71-69 victory Saturday at Virginia Tech, Boeheim tied his career best with 26 points (10-20 FG, 5-13 3FG) in 40 minutes. He scored 18 consecutive Syracuse points during one span in the first half.

Vassell averaged 20.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in leading Florida State to a pair of victories over Virginia and at Miami. He recorded a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the overtime victory against Miami. The double-double was the first of his career. He bested his previous career high in scoring of 18, which was set in the Seminoles’ victory over Virginia earlier in the week. Against Virginia, he hit what proved to be the game-winning 3-point shot with 14 seconds remaining and made two free throws with four seconds left to ice Florida State’s 54-50 win.

In a pair of Louisville road victories, Johnson averaged 15.0 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds and shot 57.9 percent from the field (11-19 FG, 2-2 3FG) off the bench.  He produced his first double-digit scoring effort with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds at Pitt in 20 minutes off the bench. He then led the Cardinals with a career-high 19 points, seven assists and three steals Saturday at No. 3 Duke.  His 19 points were the most by a Louisville player off the bench against an AP Top 3 ranked opponent since Russ Smith scored 30 points against No. 3 Kentucky in 2011. Johnson had scored 37 points for the season before totaling 30 in the last two games.
