Cavalier junior named 2019 ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Carl Söderlund has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and headlines the 2019 All-ACC Team.
 
The honors, announced Thursday, were determined by a vote of the leagues head coaches.
 
Fellow Cavalier Brandon Nakashima was named the Freshman of the Year, and Virginia head coach Andres Pedroso was selected as the Coach of the Year.
 
Söderlund, a three-time All-ACC honoree, has been ranked as high as No. 3 in singles this season and helped the No. 5 Cavaliers to a 21-4 mark this year. The Stockholm, Sweden, native has compiled a 19-4 record in singles, including a 9-1 ledger in league play and 12-4 mark against ranked opponents.


 
Playing primarily at the No. 2 singles spot, Nakashima has recorded a 14-5 mark in dual matches. A native of San Diego, California, Nakashima has been ranked as high as No. 75 in the nation in singles and boasts a 7-2 record in league matches and a 4-2 record against ranked opponents.


 
Pedroso has led Virginia to a 21-4 record, seven more wins than last year. The Cavaliers knocked off No. 1 Wake Forest at home on Feb. 8 and secured the No. 2 seed in the ACC Championship. Virginia boasts a 12-4 mark against ranked teams this season, including a 6-3 record against top-10 opponents.
