GREENSBORO, N.C. - Clemson freshman middle hitter Sandra Adeleye was named East Region Freshman of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, announced today, and headlines a group of 13 Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball student-athletes who were named to the AVCA All-East Region team. Additionally, Georgia Tech freshman outside hitter Monique Mead and Florida State sophomore outside hitter Rachael Morgan--both 2009 All-ACC picks--garnered honorable mention accolades.

All 13 All-East Region selections were named to the All-ACC team last week, including Mead, the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year, and Morgan. Clemson led all league institutions with four selections in senior defensive specialist Didem Ege, who ender her career as the ACC career leader in digs (2,303) and digs per set (4.88), senior setter Kelsey Murphy, senior outside hitter Lia Proctor, and Adeleye. Both Ege and Proctor are two-time honorees, while Murphy is appearing on the All-East Region team for the third time.

Clemson was trailed by 2009 ACC champion Florida State with three selections. Senior middle blocker Brianna Barry, the 2009 ACC Player of the Year, senior outside hitter Mira Djuric, and senior middle blocker Jordana Price, an honorable mention pick in 2008, each earned honors.

Duke and Miami each garnered two picks apiece. Sophomore setter Kellie Catanach, an honorable mention pick in 2008, and senior three-time All-East Region selection Rachael Moss appeared for Duke, while sophomore two-time All-East Region outside hitter Lane Carico, the East Region Freshman of the Year in 2008, and senior defensive specialist Cassie Loessberg appeared for Miami.

Georgia Tech junior setter Mary Ashley Tippins and Virginia Tech junior middle blocker Felicia Willoughby rounded out the list.

Among the AVCA's eight regions, the ACC's 13 selections tied with the Big Ten and Pacific-10 Conferences for the top mark in Division I. The Big East and Southeastern Conferences, along with Conference USA, had nine picks each.

Florida State is the lone ACC team still in action, with a match in the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championship Round-of-16 against Kentucky (29-4), currently ranked 13th by the AVCA, on Friday, December 11 at 6 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn. The winner will play the winner between No. 11 Minnesota, the regional host, and No. 25 Colorado State on Saturday, December 12 at 6:30 p.m. The match will be televised by ESPNU.

The Seminoles were one of a league-record five teams to earn berths in the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Championship, with Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Miami also making appearances. In addition to becoming the first team since Georgia Tech in 2004 to advance past the second round, the Seminoles are just the third ACC team to accomplish the feat since 1980, when the league first sponsored volleyball.
