Duke and North Carolina Named ACC Volleyball Co-Champions
Nov. 30, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels will share the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Championship. Each team finished the season at 15-5 in league play. North Carolina will be awarded the league's automatic qualification into the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels claim their 11th league championship and second Co-Championship while the Blue Devils earn their ninth title and first Co-Championship. The teams split their two meetings on the season with Duke defeating North Carolina on the 3rd of October by a 3-1 score. In the return match on November 13, the Tar Heels exacted revenge by sweeping Duke, 3-0. By outscoring Duke in the two meetings, 4-3, North Carolina took the tiebreaker victory.
The Tar Heels along with the rest of the conference now await the NCAA Tournament selection show, which airs live on ESPNU on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 10:00 p.m. ET. Seedings, pairings and host sites for the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds will be announced on the half-hour broadcast.
