North Carolina's Emily McGee Named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina junior outside hitter Emily McGee has been named the ACC Volleyball Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday. NC State freshman outside hitter Nicole Glass picked up honors as the Freshman of the Week.
McGee tallied 50 kills and 48 digs as the Tar Heels went 2-1 over the weekend. Against NC State, she connected on 19 kills with only four errors for a .375 hitting percentage and added two assists. In a 3-1 loss to No. 24 FSU, she compiled 18 assists and 15 digs. In the last match of the week against No. 21 Miami, she had a career-high 23 kills and 21 digs to lead the Tar Heels to a 3-2 win and the team's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The 23 kills and 27 points by the Naperville, Ill. native are both the fifth highest single-match total by an ACC player this season. This marks her second career ACC Player of the Week, having previously won it on Oct. 25, 2010.
The Tar Heels return to action this weekend when they host Virginia and Virginia Tech in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Glass recorded 50 kills and 53 points for NC State in three ACC matches over the last week. She had a career-high 21 kills in a close 3-2 loss to No. 21 Miami on Friday and 19 more in a 3-2 defeat against No. 24 Florida State on Sunday. She also added three aces to her team-high total of 19 on the season. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native compiled 3.33 kills and 1.6 digs per set in the three conference matchups.
A starter for most of the season, Glass has played in 71 of the Wolfpack's 74 sets and in all 20 matches. The award is her second of the year.
NC State will host Virginia Tech and Virginia this weekend in Raleigh, N.C.
