ACC Announces Volleyball Players of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest senior middle blocker Carlin Salmon and Florida State outside hitter Elise Walch were named Co-Players of the Week Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Wake Forest freshman setter Danae Rosendall was named the ACC Freshman of the Week. All three players helped their teams defeat ranked opponents to open conference play.
Elise Walch hit .706 while compiling 12 kills in a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival No. 20 Miami in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. The hitting percentage is the highest by any Seminole player since head coach Chris Poole took over in 2008. The Stuart, Fla. native helped close out the match with five kills in the second set and five in the third.
The win helped propel Florida State into the latest AVCA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, released Monday. The 23rd-ranked Seminoles will next hit the court this weekend when they take on Virginia on Friday and Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Wake Forest’s perfect 2-0 record over the weekend, including a win over No. 23 Duke, spurred the Demon Deacons to two weekly award winners. The team opened conference play with a 3-1 defeat of Duke and followed that with a sweep of High Point.
Carlin Salmon, from Wildwood, Mo., turned in a career-best 21 kills on just 33 attempts for a .576 hitting percentage, and also set a career-high with three aces in the match against Duke. She tallied three services aces and nine blocks in both matches en route to being named MVP of the Black & Gold Challenge.
Hudsonville, Mich. native Danae Rosendall compiled 75 assists in seven sets of action in the two wins over Duke and High Point. The freshman setter had 49 assists in the upset win over Duke and followed that with a 26 assist performance against High Point. She added 13 digs and four blocks.
Wake Forest returns to action Tuesday afternoon when they head to Boone, N.C. to take on Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
