UNC'S Bleke, Duke's McCurdy Garner Weekly ACC Volleyball Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina sophomore middle blocker Shelbey Bleke set a school career record for blocks and has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week. Duke libero Ali McCurdy posted three double-digit dig performances and has been honored as the league’s Freshman of the Week.
Bleke, a native of Gainesville, Fla., (Buchholz) averaged 1.70 blocks and 2.30 kills per set as the Tar Heels went 2-1 on the weekend, finishing second at the LSU Tiger Classic. She hit .487, committing just four errors in 39 attempts, and tallied four service aces. In 10 matches this season, Bleke has already set new career highs in kills (10), blocks (8) and service aces (2).
In the Tar Heels’ 3-1 victory against Rice, Bleke registered a career-high eight blocks, including one block solo. She hit .294 with eight kills, while recording two service aces. In the 3-0 sweep of New Mexico State, Bleke hit .769 with 10 kills and five blocks.
McCurdy, a freshman from Tampa, Fla., (Plant) averaged 5.42 digs per set as the Blue Devils went 3-1 on the week. She also notched two service aces and posted double-digit digs in three of four matches.
The freshman has collected at least 10 digs in eight of her 10 matches this season and has reached 20 three times. McCurdy currently leads the Blue Devils with 158 digs, good for an average of 4.39 per set. She committed one receiving error last week, bringing her season total to just five.
In the Blue Devils’ 3-0 sweep of Delaware, McCurdy collected 29 digs, setting a record for the most by a Duke player under the NCAA’s new 25-point scoring format. It also marked the most digs in three sets by a Blue Devil since 2006.
