Tar Heels Set To Host Carolina Classic

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina volleyball team will play its first home match of the season on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the Tar Heels take on Villanova in the third game of the Carolina Classic. Carolina is coming off an 0-3 weekend at the Mortar Board Premier but is prepared to protect its home floor against Villanova on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and then Western Kentucky (noon) and American (7 p.m.) on Saturday.

Villanova and Western Kentucky will open up the 2007 version of the Carolina Classic at 1 p.m. on Friday. Western Kentucky will return to the floor at 5 p.m. to take on American before the Tar Heels take the floor for their home opener against Villanova at 7:30 p.m. Carolina will begin Saturday's day of competition when the Tar Heels will meet the Lady Toppers of Western Kentucky at noon. Villanova will take on American at 2 p.m. before the Tar Heels and American will take center stage for the final match of the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

Carolina has an 11-1 overall record against American (6-0), Villanova (2-1), and Western Kentucky (3-0). The most recent meeting between the Tar Heels and any of their opponents was 2001 when UNC beat Villanova 3-0. Carolina won a 3-1 decision against American in 1999 and have not faced Western Kentucky since 1987 when they won 3-1.

Last year at the Carolina Classic Wichita State claimed the title with a 2-1 record, its only defeat coming at the hands of the Tar Heels, 3-2. Brianna Eskola was named to the all-tournament team for Carolina. The Tar Heels were 1-2 in the tournament against the College of Charleston, Illinois and Wichita State.

The Tar Heels enter with a 2-4 mark on the season, while Western Kentucky owns a 6-1 record, followed by American with a 4-3 mark and Villanova with an even 2-2 record.
