Carolina Heads To Purdue For Mortar Board Premier

The University of North Carolina volleyball team fresh off a Buffalo Classic title travels to West Lafayette, Ind. to play in the Mortar Board Premier hosted by Purdue. The Tar Heels enter with a 2-1 record on the year and will open the tournament on Friday against Utah at 4:30 p.m. Fans can follow all the action with CSTV's Gametracker. Utah enters the tournament 0-2 after dropping a pair of matches to UCLA and Tennessee last weekend at the AVCA Showacase in Omaha, Neb. The Utes were ranked #21 in the pre-season AVCA Top 25 Poll before falling out of the poll on Monday. Utah received 37 votes in the most recent poll. UNC is 0-1 all-time against Utah dropping a 3-0 match a year ago.
The Tar Heels will take on host Purdue at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. The Boilermakers were in the Triangle area last weekend as they went 2-1 in the Duke Invitational picking up wins against Winthrop (3-1) and East Carolina (3-0) before falling to Duke (3-1). The Tar Heels and Boilermakers have met three times with Purdue holding the edge at 2-1, including a 3-1 win in 2005 the last meeting between the teams. Purdue is currently ranked #17 in the latest AVCA poll, dropping from #13 a week ago.
The final match of the Mortar Board Premier for Carolina will be against the University of Dayton Flyers at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The all-time series between the teams is even at 1-1, but have not met since 1999 when the Tar Heels won 3-1. Dayton is the only team in the tournament with an unblemished record of 3-0 after capturing its own tournament with wins over IPFW (3-0), Bowling Green (3-1) and Illinois (3-2). For its efforts Dayton received two votes in the latest AVCA poll.
Carolina will return home next week for the Carolina Volleyball Classic to be held on September 7 and 8. American, Villanova and Western Kentucky will join the Tar Heels for the 2007 Carolina Volleyball Classic. |
