University of Virginia head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton has announced the Cavaliers' 2006 schedule. UVa will play 31 regular season matches, including 22 Atlantic Coast Conference contests.

The Cavaliers compete in three four-team round robin tournaments before commencing their 22-match ACC schedule Sept. 15 against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. UVa will play each of the other 11 ACC schools twice (home and away) during the regular season.

Virginia begins its 2006 season Aug. 25-26 when it plays in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. The Cavaliers play national semifinalist and host Tennessee in the season-opener on Aug. 25. UVa concludes the tourney by playing Miami University (Ohio) and Centenary on Aug. 26.

UVa opens the home portion of its schedule by hosting the Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament Sept. 1-2 at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers play Georgetown on Sept. 1 and wrap up the tournament on Sept. 2 with matches against Wright State and East Carolina.

The Cavaliers wrap up their preseason tournaments by traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge Sept. 8-9. On Sept. 8, the `Hoos play Pacific and host Michigan, followed by a match against Marquette on Sept. 9.

After traveling to Blacksburg on Sept. 15 to open the ACC season against Virginia Tech, UVa begins the home portion of its ACC slate against North Carolina on Sept. 22. The match against the Tar Heels marks the first of three consecutive home contests. The Cavaliers will also host NC State (Sept. 23) and Virginia Tech (Sept. 26).

"We put a tough pre-conference schedule in place with the knowledge that we are returning all of our starters from last fall," said Shelton. "We are hoping this schedule challenges and inspires us to be the best we can be. Only then will we persevere through the long ACC schedule and come out with our first ACC title."

Virginia lost just two letterwinners and returns all seven starters from its 2005 team that posted a 20-11 overall record and a 15-7 mark in the ACC.
