CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton has announced the Cavaliers' 2002 volleyball schedule. UVa will play 32 regular season matches which includes four tournaments. Virginia will also compete in the annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship November 21-24 in Atlanta, Ga. One major change that will take place in collegiate volleyball in 2002 is the use of a libero, which is a designated back-row player, intended to be used as a ball-control specialist.

In addition to hosting the College of Charleston, Georgetown and William & Mary in the Jefferson Cup Invitational September 6-7, the Cavaliers have a non-conference home match against James Madison (September 3) in University Hall. UVa will also host each of the other eight ACC teams during the 2002 season. Virginia will also play in-state rivals Virginia Tech (September 10) and Virginia Commonwealth (September 17) on the road.

The Cavaliers open the 2002 season by competing in the University of Texas Tournament in Austin, Texas August 30-31. Virginia will also play in tournaments at the University of Tennessee (September 13-14) and the University of Dayton (September 20-21).

Each team may designate one libero on the lineup sheet prior to each game. The libero, who must wear a uniform that contrasts with the color of her teammates' uniform, is allowed to replace any player in the back row without counting as a substitution. However, the libero must be replaced by the same player who she replaced in the game. There is no limit to the number of libero replacements a team is allowed per game. The libero cannot serve, attack, block or set inside the attack line.
