Wake Forest Volleyball Opens Spring Play
April 4, 2006 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team opened up its spring season, winning seven of eight games in a four-match home tournament this past weekend. Hosting a total of five teams, the Demon Deacons defeated Gardner Webb, NC State and East Carolina, while splitting games against Virginia Commonwealth. Junior Natasha Schaefer led the Deacs with strong passing and defense, while Lauren Peterson was Wake Forest's top offensive player. Wake Forest opened the day with a 30-12, 30-13 victory over Gardner Webb and then a 30-28, 30-19 win over NC State. In the afternoon, the Deacs defeated East Carolina, 30-28, 30-21, before splitting the games against Virginia Commonwealth, 23-30, 30-23. The Demon Deacons will next travel to Virginia Tech for a training day with the Hokies. After that, they will return to Winston-Salem to host one final spring tournament on April 14-15.
