GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Virginia volleyball team has received the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Sportsmanship Award for that sport. The Virginia team was recognized after completing the best turn-around season in conference volleyball history last fall. The Cavaliers finished the 2003 season with a 25-9 overall record and advanced to the semifinals at the ACC Tournament.

The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. The ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee created the awards in an effort to recognize teams that earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. Teams receiving the award have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the conference's teams.

"I am very honored that our team has earned this award," said head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton. "It is a true reflection of how the young women on our team represent the University both on and off the court. I am so proud to be associated with such an amazing group of student-athletes."
