![]() Georgia Tech Advances to Championship Final With 3-0 Win Over Virginia
Nov. 22, 2003 Final Stats | 2003 ACC Women's Volleyball Tournament ORLANDO, Fla. - The first-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the fifth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers, 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-20) Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior Laura Kuhn who hit .600 for the match compiling 10 kills in 15 chances. Virginia's Alexis Geocaris hit .500 collecting ten kills, five total blocks and three digs. Game one started with both teams exchanging points until a Yellow Jacket timeout, led to a 6-2 run and a 16-11 Georgia Tech lead. The Cavaliers would cut the margin to two at 17-15 before the Jackets would counter with yet another run. Georgia Tech finished the game on a 13-8 run to capture the 30-23 win and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Tech's Lauren Sauer and Alexandra Preiss led the offensive attack for the Jackets with four kills each. Virginia ran out to a 4-0 advantage in game two before it was quickly erased by five straight Yellow Jacket points. The Ramblin' Wreck put together a series of points to take their biggest lead thus far at 17-9 before a mini-run by Virginia cut the lead to six. It would be as close as the Cavaliers would come as Georgia Tech ran away with game two by a score of 30-20. Preiss collected six kills in the second game, while senior setter Kele Eveland tallied 19 assists. For the Cavaliers, Geocaris led UVa with five kills on seven chances. Georgia Tech jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in game three, but Virginia cut the lead to one on multiple occasions, the latter coming with the score at 9-8. The Yellow Jackets then went on 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game. A cross-court kill by Virginia's Paige Davis cut the deficit to six at 20-14, but a Lynnette Moster ace increased the Tech margin back to eight late in the game. Georgia Tech out hit Virginia .372 to .167 in game three on their way to a 30-20 win and a three games to zero match victory.
With the win, Georgia Tech advances to their second consecutive appearance in the ACC Championship game and will face the winner of the Maryland/Clemson match coming up at 4:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets run their record to 30-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 25-9.
