ORLANDO, Fla. - The second-seeded Maryland Terrapins defeated the seventh-seeded Duke Blue Devils 3-2 (23-30, 30-27, 30-23, 19-30, 15-7) Friday evening at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in the quarterfinals of the 2003 ACC Volleyball Championship. Sarah Treadwell led the charge for the Terrapins collecting a double-double with 21 kills and 14 digs, while hitting .321 for the match.

The Duke Blue Devils took command of the first game in the early going running out to 10-6 advantage. The Blue Devils would soon increase their lead to six after a 5-0 run to up their lead to 16-10. Duke's margin would escalate to a game-high seven before the Terrapins slowly chipped away, rattling off five straight points to cut the Blue Devil advantage to three at 22-19. But the Duke offensive attack was too strong for the Terps as they took the first game, 30-23. Krista Dill and Tealle Hunkus each had three kills in the game one victory for the Blue Devils.

Duke ran out to a 3-0 lead in the beginning of game two but it was to no avail as Maryland quickly erased the margin to tie the game at 5-5. Both teams would exchange points until the 13-11 mark when the Terps captured their largest lead of the match since the beginning of game one. After being down by as many as three points, Duke countered with a run of their own to take a 23-21 lead. But the lead would be short lived as the Terps battled back once again to regain the advantage and win game two 30-27. Leading the way for Maryland in game two was Treadwell with ten kills, three digs and two blocks.

Maryland scored five straight points to open game three behind the strong serving performance of senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones. The Terrapins' lead would run to 11 as they increased their advantage over Duke by a score of 20-9. After a Duke timeout, the Blue Devils broke the huddle and went on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 28-21. But the Terps would hang on and close out game three 30-23 to take a two games to one lead in the match. In the third game, Maria DiLivio had the hot hand posting seven kills and three digs.

Both teams battled back and forth in game four before Duke surged ahead 10-6 on a kill from Tealle Hunkus. The Blue Devils would increase their lead to six at 16-10 and would not look back, out hitting the Terrapins .424 to .160 en route to a 30-19 win and a 2-2 tie in the match. Duke senior Katie Gilman collected six kills to help the Blue Devils send the match to a fifth and decisive game.

In the fifth game, Maryland charged out of the gate for an early 6-1 advantage. The Blue Devils were unable to counter as the Terps went on to win the game 15-7.

With the win, Maryland runs their record to 24-7, while Duke drops to 10-19. The Terrapins will advance to Saturday's semifinals and will face the winner of the Clemson/Wake Forest game coming up at 7:30 pm.
