ORLANDO, Fla. - The fifth-seed Virginia Cavaliers (25-8) defeated the fourth-seed North Carolina Tar Heels (19-12), 3-2 Friday afternoon in the second round of the 2003 ACC Volleyball Championship. In a thrilling match that saw the 'Hoos come back from a 2-1 match deficit, Shannon Boyle led the way with a .304 hitting percentage connecting on 19 kills in 46 chances.

North Carolina took game one 30-26 after both teams battled back and forth the entire game. Virginia went out to an early 4-1 lead and saw their lead grow to as many as five at 17-12. The Tar Heels fought back and surged ahead at 26-25 to take just their second lead of the game, but it was a lead they would not relinquish as they won game one. Carolina's Aletha Green connected on five kills to lead the Heels, while Lindsay Osco posted seven kills to lead the Cavalier charge.

In game two, Virginia came out strong to take a commanding 6-1 lead. North Carolina cut the margin to two at 9-7, but after a few Tar Heel miscues Virginia pushed their lead to five at 13-8. Virginia never trailed in the second game winning game two by a score of 30-20 to even the match at one game a piece. The Cavs' Paige Davis connected on five kills to pace the offense.

Both teams were evenly matched early on in game three exchanging point after point. North Carolina took command of the game after a Tar Heel timeout to open a 13-10 lead on Virginia. Carolina later pushed their lead to a game high seven points at 21-14 en route to taking the third game by a score of 30-24. Tar Heel junior Molly Pyles registered seven kills in game three to lead the charge.

Virginia went out to early 5-2 start in game four and saw that margin increase to five at 12-7. Following a Carolina timeout, the Heels could not manage to cut into the deficit as the Cavaliers were able to maintain their lead throughout the match and win game four 30-26. Kristin Chaney led the Cavalier attack in the fourth game with six kills on nine chances.
 

 

In the fifth and decisive game, Virginia charged out of the gate for an early 6-1 advantage. The Tar Heels were unable to counter as the Cavaliers went on to win the game 15-6.

With the victory, Virginia advances to the semifinals to play the winner of the Georgia Tech/Florida State match coming up at 1:30 pm on Saturday, November 22.
