Charlottesville, Va. - Virginia (19-10, 8-8 ACC) defeated NC State (10-21, 0-16 ACC) by scores of 30-18, 27-30, 30-20, 30-28 in the first round of the 2004 ACC Volleyball Championship Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium on the grounds of the University of Virginia.

Virginia controlled the tempo in game one, never relinquishing the lead. Sarah Kirkwood notched seven kills and hit .545, leading the Cavaliers to a 30-18 victory.

NC State held Virginia to a .047 hitting percentage in the second game, recording a 30-27 win and evening the match at 1-1.

The Cavaliers won the third game 30-20 and went on to claim a 30-28 victory in the fourth game to win the match.

The Cavaliers were paced by Geocaris, who tallied 22 kills and eight block assists, while hitting .474. Stefani Eddins and Adeola Kosoko led the Wolfpack. Eddins recorded 13 kills, eight digs and nine block assists, while Kosoko collected 15 kills, nine digs and seven block assists.

Virginia will challenge third-seeded Duke at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 19 for the final slot in the semifinal round of the championship.
