Charlottesville, Va. - Maryland (13-14, 7-9 ACC) downed Wake Forest (12-16, 4-12 ACC) by scores of 28-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-27 in the first round of the 2004 ACC Volleyball Championship Thursday evening at Memorial Gymnasium on the grounds of the University of Virginia.

In a game that saw only one lead change, Wake Forest defeated Maryland 30-28 in the first game of the match. The Demon Deacons hit .341 as a team and were led by Kim Stern who recorded five kills.

Maryland won a back-and-forth second game, led by Rachel Wagener, who hit .714, recording five kills and two block assists. The Terps controlled the third game, hitting .385 as a team. Up 2-1, Maryland claimed the fourth game and the match on a strong performance from Sarah Treadwell. The senior notched seven kills on 11 swings and added five digs and a service ace.

The Terrapins were led in the match by Treadwell, who tallied 21 kills and 18 digs and Wagener, who notched 17 kills and hit a match-best .682. The Deacons were paced by Erin Borhart, who recorded a triple-double with 47 assists, 12 kills, and 13 digs.

With the victory, Maryland advances to the quarterfinals to face second-seeded Miami at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19.
