Willoughby hits .778 as Hokies sweep Eagles

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Felicia Willoughby tallied 14 kills on a .778 hitting percentage, while the Virginia Tech volleyball squad as a whole struck at a .352 clip to sweep Boston College (25-9, 25-17, 25-16) Friday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

Along with her 14 kills, Willoughby recorded six block assists. Freshman Erin Leaser dished out 31 assists and served three aces, while senior Sarah Muñoz and junior Jill Gergen registered nine and eight digs, respectively.

  • Cavaliers Defeat Maryland in Four Sets

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite dropping the first set of the match, the Virginia volleyball team rebounded to win the next three-straight to claim a 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-22) victory, and season sweep, over the Maryland Terrapins. The win marks a second-straight for the Cavaliers, as they improve their record to 15-13 and 7-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The loss drops Maryland to 6-22 on the season and 2-14 in the league.

    Fifth-year Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Cavaliers with her 12th career double-double. Shelton led all players with 17 kills and collected 11 digs, while fourth-year Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) knocked down 12 kills and hit .458 for the match, while contributing a team-high five blocks.

  • Seminole Volleyball Smashes The Tigers In Five Sets

    TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The biggest win of the season for the Florida State volleyball team came Friday night inside Tully Gym when the Seminoles came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Clemson 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-12). The win advances the Noles to 18-8 overall and 10-6 in the ACC which puts them in a three-way tie for third with Virginia Tech and Sunday's opponent, Georgia Tech. With the loss, the Tigers are knocked out of the top spot in the ACC and slip to 19-8 and 11-5 to tie for second with Miami who they face on Sunday in Coral Gables.

    This is the first victory over Clemson since November 5, 2005 when Florida State won a 3-1 decision on the road in South Carolina. Prior to this evening, the Noles had been swept 3-0 in the last five meetings with the Tigers.

  • UM Volleyball Edges Georgia Tech in Instant Classic, 3-2

    Coral Gables, Fla. - Lane Carico laid down 16 kills as Genny Mayhew added 12 to help the University of Miami volleyball team to a come-from-behind victory, 3-2, over Georgia Tech on Friday night (25-15, 20-25, 27-29, 25-21, 15-12) in an ACC matchup at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.

    Miami (23-5, 11-5 ACC) fell behind 2-1 in the match after taking the first set in blistering fashion, 25-15. The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech leaned on Chrissy DeMichelis and Talisa Kellogg in the second and third set, respectively, to go ahead.

  • Duke Tames Wolfpack 3-0

    RALEIGH, N.C. – Rachael Moss put down 16 kills without a single attack error to lead the Duke volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) sweep over NC State Friday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.

    Moss went 16-for-28 for a season-high .571 hitting percentage to contribute to a .372 clip turned in by the Blue Devils (21-8, 12-5 ACC). Moss also helped out on the defensive end with seven digs and put down her ACC-leading 49th service ace of the year.
