Sept. 12, 2008 Volleyball Rolls Past UT Arlington 3-0 On First Day Of Hilton Invitational ARLINGTON, Texas – The Duke volleyball team opened the first round of the Hilton Invitational with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-15) win over tournament host UT Arlington Friday evening in Texas Hall. The Blue Devils (5-2, 0-0 ACC) hit a season-high .468 as a team with 52 kills and just eight errors, all of which were the best three-set totals of the season for Duke. The Blue Devils held the Mavs (3-6) to a .116 clip and surrendered just 40 combined points, which is the lowest combined score from a Duke opponent since the NCAA adopted rally scoring in 2001. Seminoles Pull Off 3-0 Win Over Purple Eagles At Raider Challenge DAYTON, Ohio - Florida State volleyball took out Niagara 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) in the first match of its month-long road campaign at the Raider Challenge on Friday, Sept. 12. The Seminoles improve to 6-2 while the Purple Eagles slip further back to 0-7. "This is our first road trip, first road match, and I think we really played like it," Seminole head coach Chris Poole said. "We didn't play as confident as we had been at home, but I think that's real typical in this kind of situation. We are learning now how to overcome the obstacle of the travel." Miami Volleyball Extends Win Streak with 3-1 Win over Villanova San Francisco, Calif. - Genny Mayhew registered a match-high 19 kills and Angelica Ellis added 10 to lead the University of Miami volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-16, 31-29, 25-22) over Villanova in the opening match of the Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational in San Francisco, Calif. After dropping the first set (25-21), the Hurricanes bounced back with an emphatic 25-16 win in the second set. Miami (8-0) used five kills from senior Angelica Ellis and nine attack errors from the Wildcats to cruise in the second set. Cavaliers Sweep VCU in Front of Capacity Crowd CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Playing in front of a capacity crowd of 714 in the first home match of the season, first-year head coach Lee Maes and the Virginia volleyball team swept Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0, to open play at the Marriott Jefferson Cup. Led by second-year Kendahl Voelker’s (Fort Myers, Fla.)14 kills and career-high .684 attack percentage, the Cavaliers rallied for three identical set scores, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-22, to defeat the Rams. In the first match of the session, Appalachian State defeated Binghamton, 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 28-26). Late rallies help Tech sweep Tennessee-Martin FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- The Virginia Tech volleyball squad captured their opening match of the Arkansas Invitational, defeating Tennessee-Martin 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16), Friday night at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The Hokies (5-2, 0-0 ACC) hit .340 as a team, while holding the Skyhawks (2-9, 0-0 Ohio Valley) to a .143 hitting percentage, and used some late rallies to steal sets two and three. Sophomore Felicia Willoughby and freshman Justine Record both tallied nine kills, while sophomore Amy Wengrenovich added eight. Sophomore Betsy Horowitz led the Hokies with five blocks, and Willoughby and senior Kristen Cunninghman blocked four attacks each. Wake Opens Black & Gold Challenge With Thrilling Five-Set Victory over Western Michigan WINSTON-SALEM - The Wake Forest volleyball team opened the Black & Gold Invitational with a thrilling five-set victory over Western Michigan Friday evening in Reynolds Gym. The Deacons dropped the first set 22-25 but rebounded to win the second and third sets 25-22 and 25-20. After the Broncos won the fourth set 25-16, the Deacs took control a d won the final set 15-8. The five-set match was the first of the year for both teams. Hepburn Breaks Record As Clemson Defeats Winthrop At Carolina Classic COLUMBIA, SC - Danielle Hepburn posted her 450th career block assist during the second set of Clemson's 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) win over Winthrop in the Carolina Challenge on Friday afternoon to break Cindy Stern's school record. The senior from Miami, FL had five total blocks in the contest as Clemson held the Eagles to a .099 hitting percentage. The Tigers will take on South Carolina at the Volleyball Competition Facility at 7:30 tonight and will face the College of Charleston on Saturday. Volleyball Falls To South Carolina In Five-Set Thriller In Carolina Challenge COLUMBIA, SC - The Tiger volleyball team forced a thrilling fifth set after trailing 2-1 in the match, but South Carolina came out on top, 18-16, in the final set to post the victory in the Carolina Challenge on Friday night at the Volleyball Competition Facility. Clemson will wrap up action in the tournament on Saturday against the College of Charleston at 12:30 pm. Third Time is the Charm for Tech Volleyball - Jackets Stop Ole Miss, 3-2 OXFORD, Miss. - The Georgia Tech volleyball team pushed an opponent to a fifth set for the third time in as many matches and snapped a two-match losing streak with a comeback 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11) win over Ole Miss Friday night in the Magnolia Invitational at the Grissom Center. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-2 on the season while Ole Miss dropped to 3-5. Tech Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Loss to SMU in Magnolia Invitational Opener OXFORD, Miss. - Talisa Kellogg led Georgia Tech (5-2) with a match-high 16 kills, but SMU (4-4) held off a late Yellow Jacket rally for a 3-2 (25-21, 27-25, 15-20, 20-25, 15-12) win in the opening match of the 2008 Magnolia Invitational at the Gillom Sports Center on the campus of the University of Mississippi. The loss was the Yellow Jackets' second of the season, with both coming in five sets. Wolfpack Volleyball Drubs Norfolk State, 3-0 RALEIGH, N.C. – The new-look Wolfpack volleyball team put on an impressive performance in its home court debut at the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic on Friday, Sept. 12, shutting out Norfolk State, 3-0. The victory extends the Pack’s winning streak to three straight, pushing its record to 3-6. The Spartans dip to 2-7 with the loss. William & Mary Snaps NC State's Volleyball Winning Streak RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State fell to William & Mary, 3-0, snapping a three-match winning streak at the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic on Friday, Sept. 12. The loss moves the Pack to 3-7 on the year, while the Tribe climbs to 5-3. BC Volleyball Falls to Host Bulldogs at Yale Invitational New Haven, CT - In the first game of the Yale Invitational, Boston College suffered a 3-0 setback to host Yale at the John J. Lee Amphitheatre by a score of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-23. Leading the way for the Eagles was Taylor Williams, who registered a team high attack percentage of .524 for the match with 12 kills and one attack error. Brittany Pierpont recorded 41 assists, and Jordan Meredith added 14 kills to go along with 14 digs, leading BC in both categories. Maryland Volleyball Falls to North Dakota State NEW ORLEANS - The University of Maryland volleyball team lost to North Dakota State, 3-1, in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl on the campus of Tulane University in New Orleans Friday evening. The Bison (5-2) defeated the Terrapins (1-6), 27-25, 25-27, 25-16 and 25-16. Tar Heels Fall 3-0 At No. 21 Colorado State FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The North Carolina volleyball team dropped a 3-0 battle with No. 21 Colorado State (7-1) Friday night in Fort Collins, Co. as the Tar Heels fell 25-23 in the first and second set before dropping the final set by a 25-14 margin. Colorado native, Lauren Prussing, led the Tar Heels in kills with seven on the night as she and the Tar Heels will not have much time to reflect on the loss as they are set to take on Colorado (6-2) Saturday night in Boulder, Colo.
