Sophomore Tedi Doucet notched 12 digs against Stony Brook

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team outlasted Stony Brook Saturday night in a close five-game match, defeating the Seawolves, 3-2 (30-25, 30-24, 30-32, 22-30, 15-13), at the Hilton Inn Express Invitational at Stony Brook. Junior Jade Brown dominated for the Terps, as she had 20 kills on 42 swings (.429) and 14 digs, and Maryland improved its record to 5-1 overall. With the loss, the Seawolves are now 5-6.

Juniors Beth Gillming and Mary Beth Brown also recorded double figures in kills with 13 and 10, respectively, while Gillming added eight digs. Maggie Schmelzle led the Terrapins with 13 digs, while sophomore Tedi Doucet posted 12, one shy of her career high. Katie Usher and Tina Aramburu also had standout nights for the Terps, as Usher notched seven kills and 11 block assists, while Aramburu collected six kills. Jade Brown, Beth Gillming and Tedi Doucet were named to the all-tournament team.

The Terps recorded a blistering 19 blocks in the match and a .288 hitting percentage. Maryland posted its highest hitting percentage in the first game (.344%).

 

 

Morgan Sweany led all Seawolves and notched the match-high of 22 kills (.220 hitting percentage) and 18 digs. Gulce Dikecligil finished with 16 kills and Claire Lindner notched 12 digs on the night.

Stony Brook opened the first game with a slight lead when the Terps pushed ahead to 19-14 with three straight points on Jade Brown's serve. The Terrapins stretched the lead to 26-19 on a kill by Aramburu, with the eventual win at 30-24.

The teams played back and forth early in the second game, as the Terps opened up a six-point lead after a service by Teryn Papp for 16-10. The Seawolves closed within one at 22-21, yet strong hitting by the Terps and three Stony Brook errors gave Maryland the 30-26 win in the second game.

The Seawolves built a 5-1 early lead over the Terps, as the two teams exchanged leads through much of the third game. Although the Terps would battle to take a three-point lead at 25-22, Stony Brook persisted and won the third game despite 15 errors on 15 kills, 30-32.

Stony Brook took and retained the lead for the 30-22 win in the fourth game, and posted a 6-3 lead in the fifth game. Maryland evened the game after a Stony Brook error and a service ace by Mary Beth Brown. The Terps kept up the pressure, with key kills by Gillming, Aramburu and Jade Brown, and earned a 15-13 fifth-game victory.
