Hurricanes Volleyball Rolls to 3-0 Win Over South Dakota State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Genny Mayhew collected her third double-double (13 kills, 12 digs) of the year on Thursday night as the University of Miami volleyball squad opened the 2008 Hurricane Invitational with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-12, 25-21) over South Dakota State at the James L. Knight Sports Complex.

The Hurricanes (5-0) trailed 14-11 in the first set following a kill by SDSU's Ellyce Youngren. That's when Miami went on a 7-1 run led by the service of setter Katie Gallagher who helped to establish five consecutive points off serve. Leading the charge during the run was freshman Ali Becker with two kills, while Gallagher ended the run with a service ace.

Florida State Falls 3-2 In High Intensity Match Against No. 23 Long Beach State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For the first time in the history of the match-up, Florida State volleyball took two sets against No. 23 Long Beach State but were unable to hold on as it fell 3-2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 16-25, 7-15) to the 49ers. The Seminoles are now 3-1 as the season gets started while LBSU remains undefeated at 4-0.

"I think for us right now, we're not quite at a top 25 level but that's where we're headed," Florida State head coach Chris Poole said. "That's what we want to do with this program. And that's really all this match means, it means we're not there yet. And I thought the girls did some good things today. I'm hoping this match will be a lesson for them. They can learn from it and continue to get better."
