Maryland's Marker Wins ITA Summer Circuit Event

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- University of Maryland women's tennis junior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor Mich.) captured first place in both singles and doubles play at the University of Michigan Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament held on Monday, July 8 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Marker emerged victorious out of a pool of 64 singles participants, defeating Kentucky's Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen in the semifinals and finals, respectively. Marker downed Buckley 6-1, 6-3 and defeated fellow Wildcat Trefethen, 6-3, 7-6 in the finals match.

On the doubles end, Marker teamed up with Michigan's Kavitha Tipirneni to eliminate Buckley and Trefethen in the finals with an 8-4 victory.

Maryland's team captain for the 2001-2002 season, Marker notched a 19-12 singles record and a 22-8 record with partner Delila Causevic in doubles play.

"I am very impressed with Emily's win this summer," head coach Martin Novak said. "Both her dedication and hardwork in the offseason are indications of her drive. The win will also help her with the ITA preseason ranking as we start fall play."
