2007 All-ACC Academic Women's Tennis Team Announced
July 3, 2007 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 2007 All-ACC Academic Women's Tennis Team boasts an impressive group with NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Champion and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Audra Cohen of Miami, NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Champion Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long and three student-athletes from the national champion Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets featured on the 20-member squad, as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. This year's 20-member academic squad included 10 All-ACC performers, six All-Americans and eight repeat honorees from 2006. Miami led all ACC schools with four selections with Cohen, the ITA National Player of the Year, and ITA All-American Laura Vallverdu (singles) as the main features for the Hurricanes. Cohen, who accepted a proclamation last week declaring Friday, June 29, 2007, as "Audra Cohen Day" in Miami-Dade County, became the third student-athlete in ACC women's tennis history to capture the NCAA singles championship. The junior from Plantation, Fla., finished the 2007 season ranked No. 1 in the nation and garnered the 2007 Honda Sports Award. Georgia Tech, which became the first school in ACC tennis history to capture the NCAA women's tennis team championship, landed three picks on this year's academic unit. The Yellow Jackets, who also captured a share of the 2007 ACC regular-season title, were led by ITA All-American Kristi Miller (singles and doubles) and Alison Silverio - winner of the ITA Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership & Sportsmanship in the South region. ACC co-regular season champion Clemson also notched three selections, as ITA All-American Federica van Adrichem (doubles) headlined for the Tigers. ITA All-Americans Sara Anundsen (doubles) and Jenna Long (singles and doubles), who was named the 2007 ITA Southeast Senior Player of the Year, represented North Carolina on the academic unit. The duo made history in 2007, becoming the first in school and ACC tennis history to capture a national doubles title. Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest also earned a pair of academic nods, while Virginia and Virginia Tech placed one apiece. In addition to Cohen, Long, Miller, Silverio and van Adrichem, five other members of the All-ACC team landed spots on the All-Academic squad which included Florida State's Lauren MacFarlane and Nicole Slater, Miami's Audrey Banada, Virginia's Jennifer Stevens and Virginia Tech's Inga Beermann.
