Duke Women's Tennis Third in Final Rankings; Cargill, Sell, Johnson Honored

DURHAM, N.C.-- The final WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings have been released and the Duke women's tennis team concludes the season ranked third nationally. The Blue Devils finished 2001 with a 27-2 overall record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) also released its All-America squads with freshmen Ansley Cargill and Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) as well as senior Kathy Sell (Moorestown, N.J.) were all honored. Cargill, an Atlanta, Ga. native, received the honor after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual competition and recording a 45-4 singles record in her first year at Duke. She was selected the ITA National Rookie of the Year at the NCAA Championship.

Johnson received the honor for being ranked in the top 20 of the final WingspanBank.com rankings, while Sell advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Individual competition. Johnson tallied a 38-4 and Sell notched a 34-11 record. All three players earned All-America honors for the first time in their career.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and ITA also announced its six top American women's collegiate players who will make up the 2001 USA Tennis Collegiate Team and Cargill was selected to the team. The 2001 women's team begins play in Easton, Md. on June 18 and will also compete in USTA events in Edmond, Okla., Los Gatoes, Calif., and two events at locations to be determined.
