CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Marlene Mejia, a sophomore on the University of North Carolina women's tennis team, has been named to the Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-America Team announced today. It is the first All-America honor for Mejia, who has twice been named All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. Mejia, who is 18th in the country, earned ITA All-America honors by finishing in the final Top 20 rankings.

A native of Lansdale, Pa., Mejia was 33-11 overall playing at the No. 1 singles position for the Tar Heels. She finished the year ranked No. 18 by the ITA. In addition, she combined with Julie Rotondi to post a 17-6 ledger and finish the season ranked No. 47. Her biggest win of the season was a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory over No. 2-ranked Ansley Cargill of Duke.

Mejia and the Tar Heels recently completed the 2001 season after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. Carolina defeated Iowa, 4-1, in the first round before falling to host California, 4-1, in the second round.
