Bielik Advances to Round of 16 in NCAA Singles Championship

STANFORD, Calif. - Wake Forest women¡¦s tennis players Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik began play on Tuesday in the NCAA Singles Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif.

After a one-day rain delay, both Demon Deacons opened Tuesday with first-round victories in straight sets. Bielik, seeded No. 1 in the 64-player bracket, defeated Harvard¡¦s Susanna Lingman, ranked 71st nationally, 6-4, 6-2. Bergman posted a first-round win over 58th-ranked Kavitha Krishnamurthy of Princeton, also by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

The WFU individuals both played second-round matches this afternoon. Bergman¡¦s run ended with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to seventh-seeded Jewel Peterson of Southern Cal. Bielik advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 42 Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State. She will next face UCLA freshman Megan Bradley in the round of 16 at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Bielik will begin pulling double duty on Wednesday, as fist-round action begins in the NCAA Doubles Championship. The Deacon duo of Bergman and Bielik are seeded second in the 32-team bracket. WFU will face Katie Cunha and Lindsey Green of Notre Dame in a 3:00 p.m. match.
