Cargill Selected Finalist for Honda Award
May 17, 2001 DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University freshman Ansley Cargill has been selected one of four finalists for the 2001 Honda Award recognizing the top women's tennis player in the nation. Other finalists are Bea Bielik (Wake Forest), Michelle Dasso (Notre Dame), and Laura Granville (Stanford). Cargill, a native of Atlanta, Ga., has been ranked in the top two in the nation all season long while playing number one singles for the second-ranked Blue Devils. She has tallied a 42-3 singles record, which is the fifth-best single season total at Duke. Cargill has also notched a 29-8 doubles record. In the fall, she won the Riviera All-American and the Carolina Classic, while in the spring she finished second in the Rolex Championships. She was selected the ACC Player and Rookie of the Year after tallying an 8-1 singles and 8-0 doubles record in ACC action during the season. Of her 42 victories this season, Cargill has totaled 25 wins against ranked opponents.
Duke is currently playing in the NCAA Tournament and will take on
sixth-ranked Vanderbilt on Friday at 8:00 AM in the Elite Eight.
