FSU Women's Tennis Set To Play Illinois On Friday In Gainesville

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- The 20th-ranked Florida State Lady Seminoles will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face the 35th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match will be played at 10 a.m. Friday, May 12th and the winner will face the winner of the Florida and Bethune-Cookman match on Saturday at 4 p.m. FSU senior Kia Asberg was named the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award Recipient for the South Region which makes her one of eight finalists for the National Award. Asberg has been named to the All-ACC team in each of the past two seasons and has also been a three-time All-ACC Academic selection. Asberg has helped lead the Lady Seminoles to their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance with a 19-5 dual match record this season. Over the past two years, Asberg has won 58 of 74 matches with 54 of those wins coming in straight sets. Recently, Asberg was awarded the 2000 Weaver-James-Corrigan Post Graduate Scholarship. Florida State will be looking for their first ever NCAA Tournament win on Friday against Illinois. FSU is 16-8 on the season and ranked 20th in the nation. In 2000, the Lady Seminoles have won seven of 11 away matches including two of three at neutral sites. FSU sophomore Alida Gallovits has also been selected to play in the singles NCAA Tournament which will begin after the team competition is completed. Gallovits is currently ranked No. 44 in the country and plays both No. 1 singles and doubles for the Lady Seminoles.
