Tech Women's Tennis Team Travels to Virginia and Maryland
March 30, 1999 ATLANTA - Georgia Techs womens tennis team, which attained its highest national ranking in school history last week, will look to return to its winning ways through improved singles play when the Yellow Jackets go on the road for a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend. The Yellow Jackets (10-5, 1-2 ACC), who jumped from 50th to 28th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, play at No. 43 Virginia Saturday and at No. 41 Maryland Sunday. Tech will try to get back in the victory column after dropping ACC matches to second-ranked Duke and No. 27 North Carolina last weekend as well as a non-conference tilt at No. 25 Miami. Tech downed No. 46 Ohio State to open play last week. "Virginia and Maryland are teams that we need to pick up wins against," said Tech head coach Sue Hutchinson. "We need to play better in singles. Were not playing as well as we are capable of playing in singles. Overall, I thought we played better against Duke on Sunday than we did against North Carolina on Saturday." Against the Blue Devils, Tech freshman Mason Miller (Gainesville, Ga.) upset 34th-ranked Kristen Sanderson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
"Mason played a great match," Hutchinson said. "She moved up in the lineup and to win at No. 2
was good for her. She fought hard and really deserved to win."
