March 16, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke junior Ellah Nze has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the seventh-ranked Blue Devils to a 5-2 win over third-ranked Notre Dame last Friday in Puerto Rico in a showcase of two of the nation’s top teams.
The 69th-ranked Nze upset 14th-ranked Kristy Frilling at the top singles spot to earn her 10th dual match win of the year. Nze, a native of Tampa, Fla., gutted out a 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 victory.
Nze is 10-2 overall in dual matches, playing primarily at No. 1 and No. 2. The win over Frilling is the highest ranked opponent Nze has beaten this season and was just Frilling’s second loss of the year.
The Blue Devils were also scheduled to face William & Mary during their Puerto Rico trip, but that match was postponed due to inclement weather. The teams will now meet Sunday at 10 a.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
