Georgia Tech's O'Neill Named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Jillian O’Neill has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the 2012 season.
O’Neill, a senior from Montreal, posted a pair of singles wins and a pair of doubles wins in the first two days of the Michigan Invitational, including a victory over the nation’s 10th-ranked singles player and a win vs. the nation’s 24th-ranked doubles team.
O’Neill, ranked No. 45, lost only three games en route to straight set win over Arkansas’ Claudine Paulson to open the season. O’Neill then teamed with sophomore Alex Anghelescu to beat Washington’s pair of Andjela Nemcevic and Capucine Gregoire, 8-6.
In her second singles outing, O’Neill battled past the Huskies’ 10th-ranked Denise Dy, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4) in a two-and-a-half hour marathon in which she trailed 6-5 in first set. Finally, in doubles, O’Neill earned her second win over a ranked opponent when she teamed with Angheles to defeat Michigan’s 24th-ranked pair of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender by an 8-5 score on the Wolverines’ home courts.
