Carolina Women Shut Out at ITA Southeast Championships
November 6, 1998 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team was shutout in the first round of main draw singles at the ITA Southeast Indoor Championships Friday. The Tar Heels' highest seed, Jessica Zaganczyk, lost to Kentucky's Christy Sigurski in three sets: 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) and 6-1. Host Wake Forest University, Duke University and the University of Kentucky came out with the most singles victories with five each. One of Carolina's two doubles entries did advance to Saturday's second round. The Tar Heels' duo of Courtney Zalinski and Caroline Hill defeated East Tennessee State University's Inoue and Vega 8-3. Carolina's Zaganczyk and Sarah Hawkins fell to Duke's Siebel and Plesu 8-4. In other Carolina singles play, freshman Caroline Hill was defeated by Karen Goldstein of Duke University 6-0, 6-2, while sophomore Courtney Zalinski fell to Wake Forest's Jackie Houston 6-2, 6-1. Senior Sarah Hawkins was defeated by Shannon Stafford of the University of Kentucky 6-4, 6-2 In Thursday's qualifying singles, Carolina's Cena Hackler defeated University of Maryland's Claire O'Donoghue 7-5, 6-4, and North Carolina State University's Kristin Nichols 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Hackler fell to University of Louisville's Nadia Karpol 6-3, 6-1, in Friday's first round of main draw singles. Carolina's Jeni Burnette was defeated by Louisville's Kelly Whitler 6-2, 7-5, while senior Emily Shaffer lost to Danyell Fox of Appalachian State University 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Seven of the top eight seeded players in the tournament advanced to the
second round. Each victorious seeded player won in straight sets.
Second-round singles action begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with
doubles action starting immediately at the conclusion of singles play.
All matches are played at the Indoor Tennis Center.
