STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The 2001 NCAA Individual play kicked off on Tuesday in Stone Mountain, Ga. and freshman Ansley Cargill (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior Kathy Sell (Moorestown, N.J.) each notched singles wins to advance to the final 32 round of action.

Cargill downed 61st-ranked Kim Gates, 6-0, 6-1, while Sell defeated 62nd-ranked Christine Fusano of California, 6-3, 7-6. Cargill will next take on Alida Gallovitis of Florida State, which defeated Maria Phillips from Oklahoma State, 7-6, 7-6. Cargill now has 43 singles wins to put her tied for fourth all-time at Duke in wins in a season (Karin Miller, 43, in 1996-97).

Sell will next battle Whitney Laiho of Florida on Wednesday, which took down Ana Radeljevic of Old Dominion, 6-1, 6-2. In 1999, Sell lost to Laiho 6-2, 7-5 in the second round of the individual play. With a win on Wednesday, Sell would earn All-America status for the first time in her career.

Both senior Megan Miller (Palm City, Fla.) and Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) each fell in the first round of individual action on Tuesday. Miller lost 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 to 25th-ranked Anne Nguyen of Georgia. She concludes her career at Duke with 123 wins, which ranks fourth all-time. Johnson, currently ranked 10th-nationally, had an off day losing to 46th-ranked Lindsay Dawaf of Florida, 6-1, 6-1. The loss for the freshman was just her fifth of the season, but she finishes with 38 wins in her first year at Duke.

Duke's ninth-ranked doubles duo of Miller/Johnson also advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over 16th-ranked Sarah Riske/Aleke Tsoubanos of Vanderbilt. The duo will next take on fourth-ranked Jessica Lehnohoff/Laiho on Wednesday to advance to the final eight.

The singles and doubles competition will take place from May 22-25.
