DeRoo, McCain Fall In NCAA Individual Tennis

PALO ALTO, CALIF. -- Duke's Kelly McCain and Julie DeRoo each lost first round matches in the NCAA women's tennis singles competition on Tuesday in Palo Alto, Calif. at the Taube Tennis Center. McCain, seeded second and ranked fifth-nationally, was upset by 72nd-ranked Katarina Markovski of South Carolina, 1-6, 7-5, 5-7. The freshman Blue Devil had a match point leading 5-4 in the third set but was not able to close the match. McCain concludes the season with a 32-8 record. Junior, 35th-ranked Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) fell 6-7, 1-6 to 18th-ranked Lindsay Dawaf of Florida and finishes the season with a 30-13 record.
The Blue Devils still have one doubles tandem remaining as 26th-ranked Hillary Adams/McCain will go up against 34th-ranked Alesia Mikalayeva/Liina Suurvarik from Illinois State at 1:30 PM on Wednesday. The Blue Devil tandem has notched an 11-6 mark this season, but has not lost a match since early April, winning their last seven in a row. The winner will advance to battle the winner of the second-ranked Bea Bielik/Janet Bergman (Wake Forest) versus 55th-ranked Katie Cunha/Lindsey Green (Notre Dame) at 4:00 PM on Wednesday.
