WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Third-ranked Wake Forest disposed of upset-minded Virginia Tech in quick fashion here Saturday afternoon, 5-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.

The Deacons, 22-2 overall, put away the Hokies in just 45 minutes. Wake Forest will play a talented San Diego State team Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). The winner receives a berth to the round of 16 in Malibu (Calif.) next week.

"We had a good week of preparation and it paid off today," Wake Forest coach Brian Fleishman said. "We knew that Virginia Tech would be feisty, and they were, but we were ready."

Wake Forest's No. 1 player, Adria Engel, continued her winning ways. The ACC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year beat Tech's Ines Khelifi, 6-2, 6-1. Fellow freshman, No. 2 Bea Bielik, won easily, 6-1, 6-0 over Michele Martaus.

"It felt good to just be out on the court today," Bielik said. "It's been a while since we've played a dual match (April 23). I just tried to keep the ball on the court today and make her (Martaus) make some plays and I was able to do that today."

The Deacons have now won 19 of their last 20 dual matches with their only loss coming to Duke in the championship round of the ACC Tournament.

Tomorrow's second-round match promises to be more difficult for Wake Forest. San Diego State (16-9) is one of the top teams on the west coast.

"San Diego State is going to give us a run for the money," Fleishman said. "I was able to watch them play today (a 5-4 win over South Florida) and they are a talented team.

"I really thought we played well as a team. The crowd gave us a boost. We have to realize, however, that no one is going to roll over and die against us."

Wake Forest is making its ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Deacons' 22 wins ties a school single-season record.
