Duke Women Win 12th-Straight ACC Women's Tennis Title
April 25, 1999 NORCROSS, Ga. - The top-seeded Duke Blue Devils captured their 12th consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference women's tennis championship with a 5-0 win over second-seeded Wake Forest, Sunday at the Racquet Club of the South. Senior Kristin Sanderson clinched the match for the Blue Devils (23-2) with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Wake Forest's Janet Bergman at No. 2 singles. The Demon Deacons (15-10), were seeking their first-ever conference crown, while making their sixth appearance in the championship match this decade. Duke defeated the Wake for the championship in all six of the previous meetings for the title (1992, 1995-99). Blue Devil senior Karen Goldstein was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Goldstein defeated Wake's Jackie Houston, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 as the Blue Devils won five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. The Blue Devils also received victories from Vanessa Webb at No. 1, Megan Miller at No. 3 and Erica Biro at No. 6. All five singles matches were won in straight sets. Today's win also marks the 113 straight victory over an ACC opponent for the Blue Devils, which includes ACC and NCAA Tournament competition. Duke's last loss to a conference foe came on March 30, 1989 when the Blue Devils fell to Wake Forest, 5-4.
