Doubles Wins Help Deacs Down Clemson, 5-3
April 23, 1999 NORCROSS, Ga. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team notched a 5-3 win over Clemson on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 1999 ACC Championships at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga. The two teams were tied at three apiece following singles action, before the Demon Deacons won two doubles matches to seal the victory.
Clemson freshman Carmina Giraldo defeated Mariel Verban 6-4, 6-4 at number one singles. At flight two, Wake Forest's Janet Bergman defeated Kate-Maree Mair 6-2, 6-3. Clemson won the three and four singles matches. Junior Catherine Galvin defeated Maren Haus 6-4, 6-1 at flight three, and senior Cecilia Hincapie defeated Jackie Houston 6-1, 6-0 at flight four. Wake Forest won both five and six singles. AnneMarie Milton defeated sophomore Cinny Clausen 6-2, 6-1 to win the fifth flight, and Lea Miller defeated sophomore Christina Oldock 6-2, 6-1 to win flight six.
In doubles action, Milton and Caroline Ullring defeated Tigers Hincapie and Clausen 8-1 at flight two to give Wake Forest a 4-3 lead. The number three doubles team of Haus and Houston defeated Galvin and senior Meredith Chandler 8-5 at flight three for the win. Play was stopped at flight one doubles after Wake Forest had scored five points.
Clemson concludes the tournament with a 6-15 overall record and a 2-6 ACC mark.
