ACC Women's Tennis Championship Opens With Three Shutouts

CARY, N.C. - Virginia, Florida State and Georgia Tech posted shutout wins as the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament got under way on Thursday. NC State had to work a little harder, but also survived the opening round. Quarterfinal action on Friday finds fifth-seeded Virginia (16-6) facing No. 4 Clemson (15-8), while No. 9 NC State (8-15) takes on top-seeded Duke (22-2) in a pair of 9 a.m. matches. The noon match finds second-seeded North Carolina (20-5) opening play against No. 7 Florida State, The nationally 15th-ranked Virginia women were the first team to advance on Thursday's, blanking 12th-seeded Wake Forest (3-18) by a 4-0 score in the morning session. The Cavaliers took control by winning the doubles point, then put the match away with straight set singles win by Maria Fuccillo at No. 6, Erin Vierra at No. 4 and Li Xi at No. 3. Things were much closer in the other morning match between No. 9 NC State and No. 8 Boston College, which began at 9 a.m. and ran into the early afternoon before the Wolfpack's Joelle Kissell outlasted BC's Erina Kikuchi 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0 in a battle of All-ACC players on the No.1 court. The match clinched a 4-3 team win for the Wolfpack, while BC slipped to 10-13 with the hard-fought loss. No. 7 Florida State and No. 6 both advanced with 4-0 wins over lower seeded opponents.
