![]() Day One of ACC Women's Tennis Championship Complete

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The first day of competition at the 2008 ACC Women's Tennis Championship, held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., wrapped up Thursday night with all four top seeds from the first round advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday. Opening day saw a pair of closely contested matches, as No. 8 seed NC State and ninth-seeded Wake Forest took four hours to complete their battle with the Wolfpack pulling off a thrilling 4-3 victory. NC State grabbed an early lead after notching the doubles point, but Wake Forest jumped out to a strong start in singles play by securing wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 5. The Wolfpack would rally back to capture the Nos. 2 and 3 spots and Neils Barringer would clinch the overall match with a 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-3 win over Wake Forest's Aileen Davis at the No. 6 position. Seventh-seeded Virginia made a strong showing, taking the doubles point and winning the first two singles matches. Virginia Tech, the 10th seed, closed in on the lead with wins from Jessica Brouwer and Holly Johnson at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. The Cavaliers would hold on for a 4-2 victory, as Lindsey Pereira defeated the Hokies' Jessica Long 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. The other two matches on the day turned into 4-0 and 5-0 decisions. Fifth-seeded North Carolina posted a 4-0 win over No. 12 seed Maryland, while No. 6 seed Florida State dominated 11th-seeded Boston College 5-0. Both teams picked up the doubles point against their respective opponents and carried their winning streak into singles play. UNC's Austin Smith posted a 6-2, 6-3 win against Maggie MacKeever of Maryland to put an end to the Terrapins' season, while All-ACC pick Lauren Macfarlane and Jessica Wente wrapped up singles place at the same time for the overall shut out.
