April 14, 2008 No. 13 Tar Heels Drop No. 56 Virginia Tech, 6-1 BLACKSBURG, Va. - No. 13 North Carolina closed out its regular season schedule Sunday with a 6-1 win over No. 56 Virginia Tech at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Complex. UNC claimed five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches for its fourth win in five outings. The Tar Heels are now 16-7 and 7-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Hokies dropped to 14-12 (2-9 ACC). Carolina overpowered the homestanding Hokies at the top two positions to claim the doubles point. No. 3 Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand and No. 51 Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang captured matching 8-1 victories to give UNC an impressive early lead. Virginia Tech's Jessica Long and Yasmin Hamza topped senior Alexandra Jurewitz and junior Laura Reichert, 8-3, at No. 3. In singles, it was once again the players at the top of the lineup that set the tone. Marand, who has been among the nation's best players all season, completed her regular season with a 21-1 dual match record thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Virginia Tech's Inga Beermann. No. 29 Tsang was next off at the No. 2 position, dispatching No. 120 Hamsa in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
CLEMSON, S.C. - Senior Carol Salge, playing in the final regular season match of her career, led the Tiger women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory against Boston College on Sunday. The match concluded Clemson's ACC regular season, as the conference tournament will begin on Thursday in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Tigers, ranked #21 in the latest poll, are now 12-9 overall and 8-3 in ACC play. The Eagles fell to 9-11 on the year with a 1-10 conference record. Salge defeated Lana Krasnopolsky at the top singles position, dropping just two games in the match. The win extended her singles winning streak to 10 straight, as she finished the year with a 10-1 mark against league opponents. The native of San Roque, Brazil also teamed with Laurianne Henry to post an 8-4 win over Krasnopolsky and Gia Nafarrete at the no. 3 doubles position.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The ninth-ranked Duke women's tennis team concluded the 2008 regular season with a 7-0 win over 48th-ranked Virginia at the Snyder Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Duke ends the regular season with an overall mark of 16-3 (9-2 ACC). Seedings and matchups for the ACC Tournament, slated for April 17-20 in Orlando, Fla., will be announced on Monday. Doubles action versus the Cavaliers saw Lindsey Pereira and Maggie Yahner upset the No. 5 Duke tandem of Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson, 8-4, at the No. 1 position, but the Blue Devils won at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the initial point and go ahead 1-0. In singles, Duke won all six matches in straight sets, including a match-clinching win by senior Tory Zawacki at No. 6 as she defeated Hampton Williams, 6-2, 6-4, for the team victory.
ATLANTA - Christy Striplin played nearly flawless in her doubles and singles matches, teaming with Kirsten Flower to stop Oksana Krutiyenko and Julia Huschke, 8-0, before downing Krutiyenko, 6-0, 6-0 in singles to lead No. 2 Georgia Tech (18-4, 10-1 ACC) to a 7-0 sweep of Maryland (3-17, 0-11 ACC) Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Prior to the match, the Yellow Jackets honored seniors Whitney McCray and Kristi Miller for their contributions to the success of Georgia Tech women's tennis over the last four years. Since their arrival, Tech has won an NCAA title, two ITA National Indoor Championships, three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and a total of 90 dual matches. "Today was a special day for a couple reasons," said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. "I'm glad that we were able to celebrate Whitney and Kristi and what they have meant for our program and to me. It was nice that we could come out and play good tennis, and it's a tribute to what these girls mean to our team.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the second time this weekend, the 11th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team earned a dominating 6-1 win over an ITA Top 50 opponent, easing past No. 35 Wake Forest in its regular season finale Sunday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. The win gives Miami (15-4, 8-2 ACC) its seventh straight victory to close out the regular season and it clinches a first-round bye for the Hurricanes in this upcoming week's ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes went up 1-0 early in the afternoon after Wake Forest (8-12, 4-7) forfeited the No. 3 position and15th-ranked doubles team of Laura Vallverdu and Romy Farah - winners of nine of their last 12 together at No. 1 - took out Sasha Kulikova and Christian Tara, 8-4, in the top doubles spot.
RALEIGH, N.C. - Even Hollywood couldn't have scripted a better way to finish senior Julia Roach's final home match of her career than what transpired on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the team score tied 3-3, lone senior Julia Roach was the only Pack player left on the court to bring home the victory on Senior Day. After splitting the first two sets, Roach and Jessica Wente traded points in the third set before Roach broke Wente in the final game to win the last set 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Wolfpack in a match that almost lasted three hours. The victory marked the second highest ranked opponent that the Wolfpack have defeated in school history. The win improves the Pack's record to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Seminoles dropped to 15-6 on the year and 6-5 in league competition. The Red and White lost the doubles point to the Seminoles despite a great showing at No. 1 doubles. At No 1, the duo of Catherine Grotz and Lenka Hojckova were able to upset No. 33 Katie Rybakova and Ania Rynarzewska. After losing two of the first three points, Grotz and Hojckova rattled off seven straight points to win the match 8-2.
