April 13, 2008 Tigers Post 6-1 Win Over Maryland CLEMSON, S.C. - The 21st-ranked Clemson women's tennis team posted its sixth straight win on Saturday, downing Maryland by a 6-1 margin at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The winning streak dates back to a 6-1 upset of then-ranked #9 Duke on Mar. 23 and improved the Tigers' overall record to 11-9. Clemson is now 7-3 in conference action, while the Terps remained winless against ACC competition at 0-10 and fell to 3-16 on the year. The Tigers will conclude the 2008 regular season on Sunday, as they will play host to Boston College at 12:00 pm at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. Clemson won all three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead for the 16th time this season. Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc partnered at no. 2 to win easily over Karin Lundmark and Maggie MacKeever, 8-1. The Tiger team Laurianne Henry and Carol Salge then clinched the point with an 8-3 defeat of Julia Huschke and Oksana Krutiyenko at the third position. Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem then completed the sweep, defeating Maryland's Michal Amir and Lisa Miller, 8-4, at no. 1.
RALEIGH, N.C. - University of Miami head women's tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews registered her 132nd career win Saturday, becoming the winningest coach in program history as No. 11 Miami won its sixth straight match in a 6-1 victory over No. 45 NC State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Yaroshuk-Tews, who entered the season with 118 career wins, has led UM to 14 wins in this her seventh season at the helm of the women's tennis program. Her 132nd career win surpasses former UM coach Ian Duvenhage's mark of 131 career victories set from 1981-88. With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action. NC State drops to 11-9 overall and 4-6 in league play. After Miami went up 1-0 with wins in two of three doubles matches to open the day, No. 80 Romy Farah and No. 20 Laura Vallverdu picked up UM's second and third points of the afternoon before Bianca Eichkorn clinched the match with a win at No. 4.
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The ninth-ranked Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over 56th-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The Blue Devils improve to 15-3 (8-2 ACC) while Virginia Tech falls to 14-11 (2-8 ACC). In singles, Virginia Tech's lone win occurred in the No. 6 match as Holly Johnson defeated Tory Zawacki, 6-1, 6-4. Action at No. 1 saw Tara Iyer defeat Inga Beermann, 7-5, 6-0, while 15th-ranked Ellah Nze got past 120th-ranked Yasmin Hamza, 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (4), at No. 2. At No. 3, 17th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jessica Long and Melissa Mang defeated J.J. Larson, 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 4 match.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 13 North Carolina captured a tightly-contested doubles point and rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 48 Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. After the first two doubles matches were split, No. 51 Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang topped Jennifer Stevens and Amanda Rales, 9-8 (2), at the No. 2 position to give UNC the momentum-swinging point. After winning the doubles point, Carolina (15-7, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) dominated the first three completed singles matches to secure the dual match victory. Junior Laura Reichert quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Maggie Yahner at No. 4. Soon after Reichert's win, No. 8 Sanaz Marand continued her stellar spring with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rales at the top position. Junior Meg Fanjoy took out Cathy Nimitz at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, to seal the win. Junior Sophie Grabinksi made it 5-0 in favor of UNC with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Lara Alexander at No. 5 singles. No. 97 Smith needed a third-set tiebreak to win her match at No. 3, outlasting Lindsey Pereira, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (6).
ATLANTA - The Georgia Tech women's tennis team (17-4, 9-1 ACC) registered 19 aces en route to a 7-0 win over Boston College (9-11, 1-9) Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. "I felt like we had a great day today," head coach Bryan Shelton said. "The girls really focused well, especially late in their matches. Boston College gave us a tough match. They really prepared us for Maryland tomorrow." The Yellow Jackets designated this match as their inaugural "Ace for the Cure" match. The team donned pink jerseys and looked to raise money to assist in finding a cure for breast cancer through flat donations and donations per ace. Tech raised 2,505.24 during the event with all the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. "I was so glad we could host the "Ace for the Cure," Shelton said. "It is great that we could participate in this type of event and at least make a small contribution in the fight against breast cancer.
