UNC Women's Tennis Tops Terps, 5-4
April 10, 1999 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 27th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated #41 Maryland, 5-4 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Saturday. A solid singles performance secured Carolina's victory. While UNC won five of six singles matches in straight sets, the Terrapins won all three doubles matches. At #1 singles, junior Jessica Zaganczyk defeated Maryland's Meg Griffin 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Caroline Hill and junior Cena Hackler netted wins at #2 and #3 singles 6-0, 6-5 and 6-3, 6-0. The win moved Hackler's season record to 20-8. Sarah Hawkins and Courtney Zalinski sealed the Tar Heel victory with straight set wins at #4 and #5. Maryland's Courtney Perkins defeated Carolina's Emi Shaffer at #6 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, Maryland's top-seeded Meg Griffen and Lorraine Bittles defeated Cena Hackler and Jessica Zaganczyk 8-6. Adrienne Pavelko and Courtney Perkins won at #3 doubles 8-3. The Tar Heel victory ended Maryland's five match winning streak. The Heels move to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. Maryland's record moves to 11-5 overall, and 3-2 in the ACC. Carolina hosts Virginia on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match at the Cone-Kenfield tennis center. NORTH CAROLINA 5, MARYLAND 4
