"Overall this was a great week for our team," said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. "We were able to get three more conference wins and continue to establish ourselves in the top of the league. Hickey and Whitney McCray picked up the Jackets' only doubles win of the day, defeating Yasmin Hamza and Jessica Long, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot before Virginia Tech's third doubles tandem of Inga Beermann and Holly Johnson picked up a tiebreaker victory over Kirsten Flower and Amanda McDowell to give the Hokies the doubles point.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 11th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team won its fifth straight match and head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews tied a school record with her 131st career victory as the surging Hurricanes beat Maryland, 6-1, Sunday at the Tennis Complex at College Park. Yaroshuk-Tews, who had 118 wins in six seasons coming into 2008, won her 12th and 13th matches of the season against Boston College and Maryland over the weekend to tie Ian Duvenhage's program-high mark of 131 set from 1981-88. Miami (13-4, 6-2 ACC) has now won five straight matches for the first time this season and has earned two road sweeps over the last three weeks, taking down the Eagles and the Terrapins two weeks after winning at Virginia and Virginia Tech, March 22-23.
RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 50 NC State women's tennis team was able to defeat conference foe No. 32 Wake Forest, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The win for the Pack improves their record to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the league. With the loss, the Deacons fall to 8-10 on the year and 4-5 in conference action. The match started great for the Pack as they held a 1-0 team lead before the first ball was even hit. Wake Forest was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match as well as the No. 6 singles match because they didn't have enough players due to injuries. The Wolfpack built upon their lead by collecting the doubles point. The Red and White won both of the doubles matches in easy fashion to make it a 2-0 lead in favor of NC State.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 18 Florida State clinched their second win of the weekend as the women's tennis squad defeated conference opponents Boston College 6-1. Senior Carolin Walter clinched the win on the number three singles court with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory to keep the Seminoles on the right track heading into the final week of the regular season. "It's always good to go 2-0 on an ACC road trip weekend," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "The girls did a great job taking care of business. In the week ahead we will be working hard on our doubles and will continue to work towards finding the pairings that we will use as we head into the post season." Prior to Walter's winning match on court three, the Seminoles secured two singles victories in the two and four spots. Freshman Katie Rybakova continued her winning streak with her fourth-straight singles win, pulling out a 6-3, 7-6 victory on court two.
CLEMSON, S.C. - The Tigers cruised to a 7-0 victory over Virginia in Sunday women's tennis action, winning their fifth straight match, all against conference opponents. Clemson is now 10-9 on the year with a 6-3 mark in ACC play, while the Cavaliers fell to 9-10 overall and 5-4 against league foes. The Tigers (10-9, 6-3 ACC) took the 1-0 lead into singles play for the 15th time this season with wins at the first and third doubles positions. Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc easily defeated the Cavalier team of Jennifer Stevens and Hampton Williams, 8-2, to improve to 12-5 in dual matches. The tandem of Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge, ranked eighth nationally, then clinched the point for the Tigers at the top spot. They defeated Lara Alexander and Amanda Rales by an 8-3 margin.
