April 6, 2008 No. 15 UNC Outlasts No. 32 Wake Forest CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 15 North Carolina took advantage of an injury-plagued Demon Deacon lineup to score an impressive 7-0 victory over No. 32 Wake Forest Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels got straight-set victories from Laura Reichert, Austin Smith and Sophie Grabinski en route to a sweep of five singles matches. Wake Forest was forced to default at No. 6 singles after Sierra Poske was injured during the opening game of doubles play. UNC (14-6, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) got a quick lead in doubles when Poske appeared to injure her side in the fourth point of the match at No. 1. When Poske could not continue, No. 3 Sanaz Marand and Grabinski were given the victory. Reichert and senior Alexandra Jurewitz, who was playing in her final home match as a Tar Heel, quickly dispatched Emilee Malvehy and Katarina Reveche at No. 3 doubles to secure the point. No. 51 Katrina Tsang and Smith rallied for an 8-6 win at No. 2 to complete the sweep.
ATLANTA - Whitney McCray dropped just four games en route to a straight-set singles win after teaming with Noelle Hickey to clinch the doubles point as No. 2 Georgia Tech (15-4, 7-1 ACC) downed No. 40 Virginia (9-9, 5-3 ACC), 7-0, Saturday afternoon on the indoor courts at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. McCray and Hickey stopped Virginia's Lindsey Pereira and Lara Alexander, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles after the No. 3 Tech tandem of Amanda McDowell and Kirsten Flower dropped Hampton Williams and Cathy Nimitz, 8-2. Tech's Kristi Miller and Sasha Krupina then finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Amanda Rales and Jennifer Stevens at the top doubles spot. McCray gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 edge when she breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Pereira at No. 3 singles, and Miller pushed the score to 3-0 by stopping Rales, 6-1, 6-4, at the top singles spot. McDowell clinched match point for Tech by pulling out a 7-3 victory in a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Stevens, 6-2, 7-6 (3), and Flower made quick work of Alexander at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win to push the score to 5-0 in Tech's favor.
CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson women's tennis team won its fourth straight match and hit the .500 mark for the first time since early February, downing Virginia Tech 6-1 on Saturday morning at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers, now 9-9 overall and 5-3 in the ACC, will try for their 10th win of the season on Sunday as they play host to Virginia at 12:00 pm at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The 11th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team picked up its fourth straight win - all against Atlantic Coast Conference opposition -- with a dominant 7-0 victory over Boston College Saturday morning at the Flynn Recreation Complex. Miami (12-4, 5-2 ACC) won easily over its first unranked opponent since the Hurricanes defeated UCF, 6-1, Feb. 16 in Coral Gables. The win puts head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews just one victory away from tying the program's all-time wins mark of 131, set by Ian Duvenhage from 1981-88. For the 11th time in the last 12 contests, No. 20 Laura Vallverdu won the No. 1 position for UM, taking out Lana Krasnopolsky, 6-4, 6-1. No. 53 Michaela Kissell would beat Lauren Cash in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, in what would turn out to be the only match that advanced into a third set and No. 80 Romy Farah won easily over Katharine Attwell at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.
