No. 6 Duke Edges No. 21 Florida State, 4-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team knocked off No. 21 Florida State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla., as the Blue Devils improve to 12-3 (5-2 ACC) and the Seminoles fall to 12-4 (3-2 ACC).

Duke won the doubles point in dramatic fashion as the 53rd-ranked Seminole tandem of Ania Rynarzewska and Katie Rybakova defeated the third-ranked Blue Devil pair of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang, 8-6, at the top position before Duke was victorious at No. 3 on an 8-3 win by the freshman duo of Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze.

It would come down to the No. 2 spot, as senior Tory Zawacki and junior Jessi Robinson posted a 9-7 triumph over Carolin Walter and Federica Suess to clinch the point and go ahead 1-0.

Singles competition saw Florida State tie the score at 1-1 on a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Granson, courtesy of Suess, but Duke battled back to go up 2-1 as Robinson defeated Rynarzewska, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 6 spot.


Hokies Take 6-1 Win Over Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 decision Sunday afternoon over the Maryland Terrapins in a match played at the Tennis Center at College Park. Tech, ranked No. 50 nationally, improves to 14-7 and 2-5 in the ACC while Maryland falls to 3-13 overall and 0-6 in the ACC.

Tech swept the doubles competition for the first point then captured five of the six singles matches for the victory.

In singles, Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) picked up a 7-5, 6-4, victory over Karin Lundmark at No. 2, while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) won 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3, in her No. 3 match versus Maggie MacKeever. Elsewhere, J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 4 versus Lisa Miller.


Virginia Women's Tennis Defeats Boston College 5-2

WEYMOUTH, Mass. - The Virginia women's tennis team improved to 5-2 in the ACC with a 5-2 victory over No. 69 Boston College Sunday afternoon. The victory also improves the Cavaliers' overall record at 9-8 this season.

Virginia fell behind early by losing the doubles point. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Alina Sullivan and Katharine Attwell but the Eagles won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the opening point.

The Cavaliers rallied in the singles, taking five of the six matches. Stevens evened the match with her win over Dasha Cherkasov at No. 2 singles, winning the first set 6-2 before Cherkasov retired. Virginia clinched the win as they won three other matches in straight sets. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) defeated Lauren Cash 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) topped Attwell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Lara Alexander (London, England) downed Sullivan 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Cathy Nimitz (Glen Allen, Va.) closed out the match with her 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Alison Wagner at No. 6 singles.


#3 Yellow Jackets Sweep Wake Forest, 7-0

ATLANTA - Third-ranked Georgia Tech improved to 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (13-5 overall) with a 7-0 shutout of No. 30 Wake Forest (8-6) Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets swept all three doubles matches and proceeded to win at all six singles positions.

"This was a really good weekend for us, in the thick of the ACC season," Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton said. "We're looking forward to moving ahead to a tough match up against Florida State on Wednesday."

The Georgia Tech pair of Whitney McCray and Noelle Hickey opened doubles play with an 8-2 win over Wake Forest's Alexandra Hirsch and Emilee Malvehy in the No. 2 position. The Tech duo of Amanda McDowell and Kirsten Flower clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Christian Tara and Aileen Davis. Kristi Miller and Sasha Krupina teamed up to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Sasha Kulikova and Ana Jerman in the No. 1 spot.


Tigers Roll To 7-0 Win Over NC State

CLEMSON, S.C. - Ani Mijacika won her sixth straight singles match and the 28th-ranked Clemson women's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory over #42 NC State on Sunday afternoon. Play was forced indoors for the second straight day with temperatures below 50 degrees in the area, but the Tigers responded with wins in all three doubles matches and straight-set victories at all six singles positions. Clemson is now 8-9 on the year and 4-3 in conference action, while the Wolfpack fell to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in the ACC.

The Tigers swept the doubles matches for the seventh time this season, winning the point in under an hour of play. Clemson's 20th-ranked tandem of Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge improved to 9-2 on the year with a win over Berkeley Brock and Daria Petrovic of NC State at the top position. The Tiger duo won the last five games of the match and scored the final point on a powerful ace by Mijacika for the 8-3 win.


Play Suspended Between No. 12 Tar Heels And No. 14 'Canes

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - No. 12 North Carolina and No. 14 Miami were locked in a 2-2 tie Sunday before inclement weather forced the match at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to be halted. No decision has been made on scheduling the remainder of match.

UNC swept the doubles point, with No. 10 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski taking an 8-4 win at No. 1 over No. 19 Laura Vallverdu and Romy Farah. The Tar Heels captured a pair of 9-7 decisions at the other two positions, as Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang won at No. 2 and Laura Reichert and Alexandra Jurewitz at No. 3.

Miami won the first two singles matches to finish, as No. 104 Bianca Eichkorn was victorious at No. 4 and Caren Seenauth triumphed at No. 5. Meg Fanjoy evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Claudia Wasilewski at No. 6.
