![]() Women's Tennis ACCtion: Friday, March 28
March 29, 2008 No. 21 Florida State Upsets No. 12 North Carolina, 4-3 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - It was like déjà vu for the No. 21 Florida State women's tennis squad. With a crucial conference victory hanging in the balances, it all came down to the final singles match. But this time the Seminoles (13-3, 3-2) came out on top, posting a 4-3 upset over No. 12 North Carolina (12-6, 3-2) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday, March 28. Senior Carolin Walter didn't know the Seminoles' fate was in her hands until her final hit grazed the far inside corner of the court. With a sheepish smile, Walter was enveloped by her team--who had not only avenged a 4-3 loss last weekend at Virginia, but a nasty 7-0 defeat in Chapel Hill last year against the Tarheels. "Anytime you're in that situation and it's on the line there's a lot of pressure," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "Of course she was so focused she didn't even know she was in that position. But when she realized she'd pulled out the win, you could see the tears of joy in her eyes because we've gone from one extreme to the other in five days."
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - With the score tied 3-3, sophomore Claudia Wasilewski picked up a close 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win to lead the No. 14 University of Miami women's tennis team past No. 6 Duke Friday night, 4-3, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Wasilewski, after dropping the first set to Jessi Robinson in the No. 6 spot, was able to rally to take the second set before eventually prevailing late in the third to secure the win for the Hurricanes. "I am so proud of this team," head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "They came together so big tonight and pulled off their biggest win of the season." UM improves to 11-4 overall with the win and 4-2 in ACC play while Duke falls to 11-3 and 4-2 in league action. The `Canes, who have now won four of their last five, improved to 7-2 at home with the win over the Blue Devils.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia women's tennis team improved to 4-2 in the ACC with a 6-1 victory over Maryland Friday afternoon at the Tennis Center of College Park. The victory also evens the Cavaliers' overall record at 8-8 this season. Virginia opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) topped Karin Lundmark and Julia Huschke 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and Lara Alexander (London, England) and Hampton Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Maggie MacKeever and Oksana Krutiyenko 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) added a tiebreaker victory at No. 1 doubles against Michal Amir and Lisa Miller. In singles, the Cavaliers scored four straight set wins to seal the victory. Rales defeated Amir 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 1 position to improve to 5-1 at No. 1 singles in ACC play. At No. 2 singles, Stevens posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lundmark. Pereira also had a 6-3, 6-2 win, topping MacKeever at No. 3 singles. Alexander defeated Huschke 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Yahner rallied from dropping the first set for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Miller at the No. 4 position.
