Cavalier Women's Tennis Upsets No. 15 Florida State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia women's tennis team posted its biggest upset in two seasons, topping No. 15 Florida State 4-3 Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won the last match on the courts, rallying from a two-break deficit at 4-1 in the third set, to beat No. 68 Lauren Macfarlane to clinch the upset.

The match started with Virginia taking the doubles point, which proved to be the difference in the match. At No. 2 doubles, Rales and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) cruised to an 8-2 win over No. 53 Ania Rynarzewska and Katie Rybakova. After the Seminoles won at No. 3 doubles, the Cavalier team of Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) clinched the opening point with an 8-3 win over Carolin Walter and Federica Suess at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, the Seminoles drew even at 1-1 as Rybakova topped Stevens at No. 6 singles. Yahner gave Virginia the lead again, 2-1, as she completed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jessica Wente at No. 4 singles. Florida State recorded wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles to take a 3-2 lead.


No. 9 Duke Upsets No. 2 Georgia Tech, 4-3

DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Blue Devil women's tennis team defeated defending national champion and second-ranked Georgia Tech, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Duke won the doubles point for the sixth straight match, as the freshman duo of Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze defeated Georgia Tech's 50th-ranked pair of Sasha Krupina and Whitney McCray, 8-6, at No. 2 before sophomore Jessi Robinson and senior Tory Zawacki stopped Noelle Hickey and Christy Striplin, 8-5, at No. 3 to clinch the point and put the Blue Devils up early, 1-0.

The third-ranked Duke tandem of junior Melissa Mang and sophomore Amanda Granson completed the doubles sweep - Duke's fifth in six contests - with an 8-6 win over Tech's 14th-ranked team of Kristi Miller and Kirsten Flower at the top position.


No. 12 Hurricanes Beat Hokies For Second Straight Road Win

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 12th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team downed No. 47 Virginia Tech, 4-3, Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center to complete the sweep of ACC's teams from Virginia after knocking off No. 50 Virginia on Saturday.

Miami (10-4, 3-2 ACC), after sweeping singles play a day earlier against the Cavaliers, won in four of the top five singles matches to pick up the win over the Hokies despite dropping the doubles point to open the match for the second time in as many days.

No. 21 Laura Vallverdu, No. 73 Romy Farah, Caren Seenauth and No. 104 Bianca Eichkorn picked up the wins necessary for UM to come home victorious. Vallverdu won easily over Inga Beerman at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, for her ninth win in 10 tries, Farah took out Jessica Long at No. 3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, Seenauth defeated JJ Larson, 6-3, 6-1 and Eichkorn beat Jessica Brouwer, 6-0, 6-3 in the fifth position.

No. 15 FSU Women's Tennis Sweeps No. 47 Virginia Tech 7-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. - After a much-needed, mid-season rest, Florida State's No.15-ranked women's tennis squad returned to the courts this morning to defeat ACC foes No. 47 Virginia Tech 7-0. The Seminoles (12-2, 2-1) swept both the doubles and singles competitions to remain undefeated against the Hokies (12-6, 0-4).

Senior No. 100 Carolin Walter clinched the Seminoles' 12th victory of the year on court three with a powerful 6-4, 6-0 win over the Hokies' Jessica Long. Florida State sophomore Jessica Wente took the Seminoles' first singles victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of J.J. Larson. Freshman Federica Suess finished next, scoring FSU's third point of the day in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Virginia Tech's Holly Johnson.

Florida State also won the doubles point with a complete sweep of the competition. Walter and Suess also clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win over the Hokies' Long and Yasmin Hamza.


Wake Forest Shuts Down Maryland 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday when they secured a 6-1 victory over Maryland in College Park. The Demon Deacons are now 7-5 overall, while the Terps stand at 3-10, 0-4.

Wake Forest opened the match by earning its fourth consecutive doubles point. Sasha Kulikova/Sierra Poske was the first Demon Deacon tandem to finish, defeating Michal Amir and Lisa Miller 8-6. Christian Tara and Ana Jerman followed with an 8-5 win over Karin Lundmark and Julia Huschke.

Kulikova improved to 11-0 at No. 2 singles when she held Lundmark to just one game though two sets (6-1, 6-0). The Moscow, Russia native is now 11-1 during dual match season and 22-6 for the year.


No. 12 Hurricanes Sweep Singles Matches Versus Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite losing the doubles point and falling behind 1-0 early on, the 12th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team dominated No. 50 Virginia Saturday, 6-1, sweeping all six singles matches at the Snyder Tennis Center en route to its first Atlantic Coast Conference road victory of the season.

With the win, the Hurricanes (9-4, 2-2 ACC) moved back to .500 in conference play with their seventh win this season against an opponent ranked inside the ITA's Top 50.

Four of UM's six singles wins over Virginia (6-8, 2-2) came in straight sets. No. 21 Laura Vallverdu cruised to her eighth win in her last nine matches at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Amanda Rales. No. 49 Michaela Kissell also won easily, 6-1, 6-3, over Maggie Yahner at No. 3, while Caren Seenauth downed Lara Alexander, 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth spot and Claudia Wasilewski nearly shutout Hampton Williams at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.


No. 13 UNC Bounces Back With 4-3 Win Over No. 34 Clemson

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 13 North Carolina scored its first win over Clemson in seven meetings when the Tar Heels topped the Lady Tigers, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Junior Austin Smith and sophomore Katrina Tsang rallied from a 6-4 hole at No. 2 doubles to defeat Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem, 9-7, and clinch what would prove to be the deciding doubles point.

Clemson (5-9, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) quickly evened the score with Carol Salge's 6-0, 6-2, win over Laura Reichert at No. 4 singles. No. 95 Smith put UNC (12-5, 3-1 ACC) back in front, however, as the Hilton Head Island, S.C., product handled No. 124 van Adrichem in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Sophie Grabinksi then pushed the Tar Heels to the brink of victory with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Alexandra Luc at No. 6.

Ina Hadziselimovic pulled the Lady Tigers to within one at 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over junior Meg Fanjoy at No. 5, setting the stage for a pair of dramatic finishes at the top of the lineup to decide the match.


No. 45 NC State Downs No. 54 Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 45 women's tennis team defeated No. 54 Boston College 4-3 Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the victory the Pack move 9-5 overall and an even 2-2 in conference play. Boston College falls to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

The Pack started off great as they were able to take the doubles point. Catherine Grotz and Kristen Bleakley dropped the first doubles match at No. 2, 8-3, against Alina Sullivan and Katharine Attwell.. Julia Roach and Lenka Hojckova were able to take the first doubles match for the Pack 9-7 against Gia Nafarrete and Lana Krasnopolsky. Daria Petrovic and Berkley Brock won a thrilling match at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker. They defeated Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov 9-8 (5) to secure the doubles point for the Wolfpack.
