Alabama Escapes with 5-4 Women's Tennis Win at Tech
February 13, 1999 ATLANTA - Alabama's Becca Baum and Jenny Ketchum downed Georgia Tech's Autumn Richards and Xenia Uy at No. 3 doubles in the final match of the day to lift the Crimson Tide to a 5-4 victory over the Yellow Jackets in women's tennis action Saturday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. "It's always disappointing to lose, especially when the match is so close," said Georgia Tech head coach Sue Hutchinson. "I thought we fought hard to get back into the match. It was a heartbreaker, but how we bounce back will show what kind of team we are." The Jackets (3-2) trailed 4-2 with three matches remaining before Tech's Autumn Richards won at No. 6 singles and Tech's No. 2 doubles team of Bobbi Guthrie and Tamarra Jenkin both won to tie the match at four with the third doubles match remaining. Baum and Ketchum jumped out to a 6-3 lead at No. 3 doubles before Richards and Uy rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the eight-game pro-set. Baum and Ketchum came back to win the next three games to win the match, 9-7, and seal the win for the Crimson Tide. Other winners for Georgia Tech were Sabrina Pardo at No. 2 singles and Mason Miller at No. 4 singles. The Yellow Jackets return to action on Friday when Tech travels to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers at 2 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind. Alabama 5, Georgia Tech 4
