Tech Women Win 1999 Opener Against Georgia State
January 29, 1999 ATLANTA - Georgia Tech's women's tennis team defeated Georgia State 4-3 on Friday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in the Yellow Jackets' first dual match of the 1999 season. "Considering that we had some people out and some people injured, I didn't think we missed a beat because of our depth," said Tech head coach Sue Hutchinson. "We have eight good players, and it was nice to see our depth come through for us." Tech sophomore Bobbi Guthrie missed the match with an illness, and the Jackets defaulted at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions after senior Sybi Parker clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over sophomore Mable Abraham at No. 2 singles. Freshmen Laura Ozolins and Mason Miller, who were to play at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, are both nursing shoulder injuries. Tech opened the match by securing the doubles point as tandems of Sybi Parker and Laura Ozolins, and Autumn Richards and Mason Miller both posted wins. Senior Xenia Uy and junior Tamarra Jenkins also won in singles. Tech's next match is against Davidson Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
